TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Authentic experience in artistic exploration is authentic exploration of one’s world and oneself. Artmaking is serious play and joyous work. Artmaking offers the richness of sensory and expressive capacities provided by paper, paint, pencil, glue, earth, etc., coupled with the opportunity to intimately observe and investigate the self and the world. Artmaking is where our many needs are simultaneously satiated: the biological need to touch and change, the intellectual need to question and investigate and the aesthetic need to seek, see and recognize.
When artmaking in a community, artists’ learning expands through continual dialogue, proximity, exchange of ideas and peer support. Making art and viewing art puts the individual in charge of the unfolding, lifelong process of self-making. Continued engagement in the arts puts the individual in collaboration with the making of community, society and culture.
