Welcome to a Sonoma Valley Museum of Art Satellite Gallery! This Spring, 4th and 5th grade student artists at Dunbar Elementary and Sonoma Charter School participated in the Art Rewards The Student program through the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art with Teaching Artist Nicole Rose Gelormino. What does the future have in store for us? What role do we play in that future? Who are we in the future? While we built skills in drawing, we searched the far reaches of our imagination for visions of our future. The future brings up a broad range of feelings: anxiety, hope, confusion, yearning and more. We see the future through a diverse set of lenses: social, political, environmental, whimsical, science-fictive (or technological), comedic, and personal. Our visions are as diverse and unique as are we.
¿Qué nos tiene deparado el futuro, y que papel jugamos en él? Al tiempo que desarrollamos nuestras habilidades de dibujo, investigamos los alcances de nuestra imaginación para encontrar visiones de nuestro futuro. Esta búsqueda produjo una amplia gama de sentimientos: ansiedad, esperanza, confusión, nostalgia, y más. Through drawing games and interactive discussion, we explored a full range of lines. What directions can lines go in? How might they connect? What qualities might lines express? We looked to Julie Mehretu’s mural-sized drawing Howl I & II for inspiration.

The artwork of Diana Sofia Lozano and Oscar Murillo appeals to our sense of touch. In these drawings, we sampled a bunch of different textures in our environments and in our imaginations. How might line be used to show how something feels when touched?

By following a set of random rules and then breaking those rules, we developed silly, surprising and frightening monsters.

Inspired by the regal paintings of African-American women family and friends by artist Mickelene Thomas, we imagined ourselves as royalty. We designed outfits, accessories and patterns we might wear as royalty.

Bay Area-based printmakers Jesús Barraza, Melanie Cervanted and Juan R Fuentes portray Latinx cultural icons and political activists using bold colored shapes and ancestral patterns. We imagined that our zoom class was a meeting of superheroes and activists of the future.

The pastel drawings of Toyin Ojih Odutola depict imaginary characters who challenge social norms. We built skills in observing and measuring the features of our own faces. We experimented with unexpected color to convey contour, textures, dark and light tones.

We imagined ourselves as the protagonists of a movie about the future. In a drawing of the epic climax of that movie, we considered characters, action, energy and setting. Paintings, drawings and collages by the following artists inspired us to blend real and imaginary elements: Mehreen Murtaza, Beatriz Gonzalez, Judy Baca and David Huffman.
Nos imaginamos como los protagonistas de una película sobre el futuro. En un dibujo de clímax épico de la película, consideramos personajes, acción, energía, y entorno.
